Truing is done to improve the concentricity of burs by shaping stone against a rotating instrument. It is a procedure where instrument is run against a harder abrasive block until it rotates without eccentricity. Truing improves cutting efficiency.

Buffing - process of polishing the occlusal surface of cast metal using soft bristle disc and tripoli or Bar buffing compound

Dressing- The shaping of abrasive to correct its size, shape and remove clogged debris, done using a dressing stone.


Blinding -  The process of clogging of an abrasive during work. It reduces efficiency. Dressing is done to remove abrasive blinding.


Grit -  term to describe size of abrasive.

Dont confuse this blinding with blinding techniques in epidemiology...
